In class we spoke about the "fairness" in sweat shops and businesses alike. I personally think that if its for money, then people will be willing to do anything. People who have no other choice need to make a living, and so even if they are being paid very little, they will still do it. To me, there is no "fairness" in business.

I think people in the buissnes word shoud be required to attend some ethic classes when they need to renew their licences or something. So many of our econmic probles are steming off of copret greed. At one time a man could support his family on a good factory job. Now all thoes jobs are being outsorced over seas becuse labor is cheeper and the economic infastrcture of the middle class that once depended so much on thoes kinds of jobs is falling apart. while many of thoes coperations were bosting record profits a year ago. But now becuse the middle class is falling becuse of the weaking infastrctue the whole economy is in the pooper. If only people would worry a little less about money and a little more on long term stablity we would not be in this mess were in now.

I agree with the other students that commented on the unethical policies of business people. Many people come to this country in search of a good job to sustain the family they bring with them and those back home. reality, is that they barely make ends meet and struggle to sustain themselves with the little "under the table" pay they recieve for "dirt jobs" that people refuse to do. I do understand that a business man cannot pay thier workers the maximum becuase he will not make any profit but in most cases business men are selfish and pay these people the minimum becuase they have " no other choice" but to accept it.

Should we then conclude that Henry and his father were not fair to the maid? I don't think so. I think Leila misunderstood the relationship between the maid, Henry and his father. They were fair to her and do respect her. If they don't, they will not fulfill her final wish of cremating the remains and sending it back to Korea. Henry's father actually took are places but the fact that she was a maid placed a role in the relationship. Maids do not rub shoulders with the boss , the cultural norm of Korea is different. The power distance is large due to cultural differences. She always kept to herself because she was not there to play the role of a mother but that of a caretaker. Even when she was sick, she considered her health secondary while her work and loyalty to the boss was primary to her.
