Ona's Suicide

Una Leong suicide is symbolic the trumatic and the repression of an transform of individuality. Una's suicide continue to hunt the novel, because the reason for Una's suicide is never found out. This leaves the reader with a strong desire to find out what was the caused of Una's suicide.

I really like the idea of Ona's suicide being symbolic of the repression of individuality. As the middle child, it is possible that Ona was torn between different values and different ideas, both among her parents and among her siblings. Also, as the suicide is a continually recurring detail in the story, it is never far from the reader's mind.

I completely agree, which is EXACTLY why it is so annoying that the book ends with a revelation not having to do with Ona!

I understand that maybe Ng may have wanted the reader to look past this and maybe understand that there aren't always answers to some of life's questions... but I can't help but to feel frustrated.

Ng seemed to have wanted to end the story with a particular moral in mind. If you spend your whole life in the past you will never be able to move forward. Rather than always searching for answers sometimes you just have to let them come to you. I am not a fan of the ending myself yet I think it was very clever of Ng in order to get her point across.

I agree with federico, that the moral of Bone is "If you spend your whole life in the past you will never be able to move forward." That seems very simple but true. We all wonder why Ng ends the book the way she did, in the past, maybe she ends it this way because the characters have not moved on yet. And we as the reader also cannot look in the past for the answers because Ona is the only one who knows why she did what she did. The answer to this question cannot be found through Leila's memories of the past. I think the Leong family needs to come to peace with what has happened and move on.
