The book is written by a male author and has a male character. I think this makes a signficant change. Its more about physical work, like Donald's railroad dream. He has to go through physical tasks in order to become an adult, compared with bone where Lei goes to through a range of emotions in order to find peace.

That is really interesting. I did not think about that before. Please bring that up next time we meet.
i don't htink there is musch of a diffrince between how men and woman grow and mature. There are woman out there that engage in hevy labor and there are men that engage is speirtual and emocinal thought. It goes both ways and as nothing to do with being male or female.
I agree that the fact that this book was written by a male author, and has a male narrator makes a difference because the writing style is different. While Bone and Mrs. Spring Fragrance were both descriptive in language, the language of Donald Duk is much more straight-forward.
Both men and women search for identity in their lives. Being that everyone is different in their own way, we may all take different routes in finding ourselves. As for Donald, he did have more of a male engagement in how he went about his search for identity, and I do agree that since the author Frank Chin was male it did have some effect on that.
