Bones---Disrespecting ones parents

In class I brought up that some of the things Leila said were disrespectful of her mother, "What wasn't simple was my guilt about having a better life than Mah. She married my father for a thrill and Leon for convenience." (p.10) I think that feeling guilt is okay as long as you do not undermine all the hard work someone has done for you. She sounds ungrateful and patronizing to me, especially in the second sentence. She has no right to judge any decisions her mother made in her life because she did not have to live through all the things her mother did. It reminds me of the scene in "A Raisin in the sun" when Beneatha gets slapped by her mother for over stepping her boundaries with her opinions. I feel Leila over stepped her boundaries by calling out her mother's failed marriages.

I like the illusion you made to The Raisin in the Sun. I agree with most of the points you made that the daughter shouldnt be calling out her mother failed marriages but there might be a lessoned to be learned from that. The mother married for everything but love and ended in horrible situations. She supposedly married for love and it would be nice to see if she learned from her mother or if she ends up in a horrible marriage as well, for acting out of instinct.

I agree that a daughter shouldn't say that to her mother or about her mother. I just feel that Leila has been through a lot in her life. It is natural tendency to blame her struggles on someone else. I feel that she does love her mother and doesn't mean to hurt her mom by what she says. However, she wants to find an explanation for everything that has happened to her family and herself. Therefore, she goes and tries to find that reasoning by blaming her mother. I feel that it is based on a psychological need of Leila to find out the cause of the struggles in her life.
