Sui Sin Far/Edith Eaton as Insider and Outsider

Is Sui Sin Far a reliable source for insight into Asian-American culture in her stories and articles? What challenges does she face when she writes about Chinese, Chinese-American and American relationships?

I think she is a reliable source for insight into her own experience of the Asian-American culture. She might have similar experiences as other Asian-Americans, but not everyone reacts the same to every situation. A person might have the same experience as someone else, but that experience might change one person more than another person. If Sui Sin Far has a negative outlook on all white Americans because of her experiences, it does not mean that a person with similar experiences will not generalize; and feel that those particular white Americans are prejudice.

I'm split between my decision whether she is a reliable source or not. I feel that she is because of how she did come from China and did experience the life of coming into America. She probably went through some of the things that she writes about in her stories. However, like Stephanie said, the same experiences may effect two people differently. I feel that she isn't a reliable source because she left China at a very young age. Like somebody said in class, it is a complete different experience if you leave at a very young age and if you leave when you are in your teens or twenties. Most of the stories she tells are ones with people much older coming to America. Therefore, I feel that she isn't reliable in telling how they felt and what their experiences were.

I too am undecided on whether or not she is a reliable source. Like Stephanie said the experiences may be the same, but the way people view things and handle situations are differently. As for her leaving China at an early age and not being reliable on experiences and feelings in her stories, she may be writing on what she thought she would feel or on what others may have told her they felt in their experience.

While I believe that she can be considered to be a reliable source on at least some of her experiences regarding the Asian-American culture, I believe that because she had to deal with many negative aspects of life in the US, the negativity has influenced her writing, and her writing has become more one-sided in that it does not showcase the positivity.
