I know we're going for Ms. Park (and that's cool), but Junot Diaz will also be there and I'm pretty crazy excited to see him speak. He's the only mainstream Dominican-American writer ever, and therefore a bit of a hero to me as a Dominican-American. :) I imagine the Asian-Americans in the class would feel similarly about seeing Amy Tan or ... well, Cathy Park Hong. Yes? Do you appreciate or otherwise want a greater variety of available mainstream Asian-American icons or is it not important to you as Asian-Americans?

I really enjoyed listening to both of the speakers describe their inspirations and their experiences as writers. I also agree that sometimes when you find writers that are from your own culture, you appreciate their writing because it is about something familiar. Furthermore, this makes us appreciate different "cultural" authors because we can see the evolution and changing nature of American culture.

I loved the readings by both writers. the one Ms. Park did about the woman who lost all her children broke my heart. I was alos suprised about the layed back and colorful language Mr. Diaz choose to use when speaking. He semmed to be able to conect well with the working class students here at RN. Pluse it was cool he was an Alumni from RN. I liked both of them a lot.

I really enjoyed both speakers as well. Does anyone else seem to think that Mr. Diaz was using such strong language on purpose? After all no one would expect someone of his stature to speak in that manner especially during an academic presentation. It seemed as if he was trying to get a message across that we need to be ourselves and not conform to society's expectations of us.
